Symposium: The Translatio and the Camiño de Santiago at Costa da Morte

The project to be developed by the Concello de Vimianzo within the program O Teu Xacobeo aims to highlight the representation of the episode of the Translatio that picks up the eardrum of the side door of the Church of Santiago de Cereixo.

This image is unique in that it is the oldest stone iconography known in the world on this subject, and is also inspired by the earliest versions that spoke of the Apostle´s casket being accompanied by seven disciples. On the other hand, in the key of the eardrum are the figures of a bishop with the walking stick in his hand and an angel who seem to witness the scene, images that refer to another part of the Jacobean tradition, the Inventio, or the discovery of the tomb.

The presence of the invocation of Santiago in Cereixo, so close to the sanctuary of the Virxe da Barca of Muxía, suggests the possibility that the Camariñas and Cerezo estuary could function as a port of arrival for pilgrims from northern Europe from the Middle Ages.
