Its construction was thanks to the philanthropist born in the town at the end of the 18th century, Don Fernando Branco de Lema, who in his legacy left abundant funds for the construction of a primary and secondary school, the current Fernando Branco Institute.
The high school is a work of great eclectic architectural beauty built in the late nineteenth century. It is worth taking a look inside at the library of incalculable value, for the wealth and quality of its collection, and the chapel where the remains of the founder rest in a white marble mausoleum. In addition to this building, you can enjoy the fantastic botanical garden that surrounds it, with hundreds of examples of various species brought from different parts of the world.
