Fiot 26

"There are truths that can only be revealed when they have been discovered" claims Nawal, the protagonist of Incendios (Scorched, by Wajdi Mouawad), one of the plays which make up this edition of FIOT (International Autumnal Festival of Theatre).

The theatre is a powerful ally in the discovery of the human condition as it manifests reality and its contradictions at the same time, it provokes the emotions and inspires the dreams upon which we act. Theatre is a powerful weapon; whilst not being true reality, it explains reality through the verisimilitude of fiction and the audiences becomes complicit in an attempt to reconstruct the facts. The latest edition of the festival emphasised these characteristic qualities of truth and theatre. Although it is a compelling presentation, the world is different than it seems. Nothing is what it seems! The play highlights the duality or polymorphous nature of reality, blurring the limits and blending the opposites of love and hate, hope and despair, fear and bravery, anguish and happiness, making it hard to differentiate between victims and killers, heroes and cowards.
