Visit to one of the most important monuments of Galician prehistory: the Dombate Dolmen.
Object of various excavations and studies, recently a plan has been created for its complete recovery and enhancement in which the excavations are protected with a wooden dome and a center for the reception and interpretation of the monument is created.
Dated between 3800 and 2500 BC, its beauty and good state of preservation has led it to be considered the Galician Megalithic Cathedral, having been a source of inspiration for writers such as Eduardo Pondal, Manuel Murguía, Otero Pedraio, Manuel María, César Molina ... In the excavations carried out at the end of the 80s, the remains of another previous dolmen named "Recent Dombate" have been discovered, with almost 6000 years old. We begin the visit by the interpretation center where we can check the grandeur of the dolmen, observe his paintings and learn a little more about life and death in the Neolithic. The main chamber of Dombate is formed by seven large vertical slabs and one that covers them of 6 tons of weight. The entrance corridor is oriented towards the winter solstice. In addition to the grave goods deposited in rituals and successive burials, one of the most important characteristics of this dolmen are the engravings and the polychrome rock paintings.
We can find them on the inside face of all the slabs, distinguishing geometric shapes with parallel and oblique lines painted in black and red, obtained from charcoal and iron oxide on a kaolin base. In the last excavations of the year 2010 has also been discovered in the vicinity of the burial mound more remains of prehistoric life: bonfires, tools, weapons, ceramics, holes of housing pole and several ditches hundreds of meters away that remain a mystery.
